What is the difference between the term" Aseptic" and ''Sterile''

Aseptic is related to conditions and handling, Sterile is related to the state of a product.

Aseptic means that you apply such techniques that infection or contamination of the work in progress will be prevented and the product will be rendered virtually free of micro-organisms. Aseptic conditions will in general be combined by the use of disinfectants. Disinfectants partially kill micro-organisms and inhibit their growth and can at best reach a sterility assurance level of 10e-3.

Sterile means that micro-organisms will be absent from the product under discussion. To reach this the product for which you claim sterility has been treated in such a manner that it can be assumed that all micro-organisms have been killed (preferably by heat treatment) with a statistical defined sterility assurance level of at least 10e-6. Or in other words; at maximum 1 in a million items may show non-sterility.
